[Overwatch 2] Congratulations to OW2 for Reaching #1 on Steam's Negative Reviews in Just One Day

Blizzard, you are guilty of great crimes! OW2 having such a day means it's reached the end.

On launch day, it was bombarded by countless players to the top of the negative reviews. Many players specifically downloaded the 40GB game just to give OW2 a negative review. Do you know how much resentment Chinese players hold against you?

The Blizzard of Old

Perhaps long ago, Blizzard truly deserved the phrase "Blizzard quality, guaranteed excellence." But looking at it now, all Blizzard has left is historical glory and current stench.

The old Blizzard had Warcraft, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, StarCraft, Diablo, and more. It was the gaming enlightenment for countless people, pioneering era-defining gameplay. Whether Warcraft or StarCraft, the stories behind each game were like experiencing another world. How many people made like-minded friends through games? How many people were moved by a single game?

When I saw Illidan say "The fury in my heart cannot be quelled!" in the CG, or Kerrigan's "I am the Swarm!", I felt goosebumps rising. That adventurous heart couldn't wait to dive into the game and write my own legend.

Illidan

Kerrigan

I used to think I had plenty of time to experience all these great games one by one. But sadly, to this day, I still haven't fully experienced StarCraft's story - getting crushed by even easy AI made me close the game. And now the chances seem even slimmer. After NetEase and Blizzard's contract ended, I don't want to use a VPN with high latency to play on foreign servers, not to mention the language barrier.

The Conquered OW2 Review Section

Before OW2 topped the negative reviews, the #1 spot belonged to a Chinese game, Sanguosha (Three Kingdoms Kill), despised for extreme pay-to-win mechanics, full of typical Chinese money-grabbing game characteristics. Yet today, "Overwatch 2" reached #1 on Steam's negative reviews in just one day. If I hadn't seen this news on short videos, I wouldn't have believed it. I thought even if OW2 was bad, foreign players might give it some positive reviews?

Seems I overestimated Blizzard's bottom line. When OW first came out, it was a buy-to-play game - you paid a few hundred yuan and could permanently experience all future content. To maintain player freshness, game companies need to constantly release new content to attract new players, otherwise they'd definitely lose money.

But in OW2, this buy-to-play game added a "Battle Pass" system... requiring players to pay and complete missions to get new heroes. What's the point of buy-to-play then? After launching on Steam, they even made the game free - what about the money from previous paying players??

Not to mention the previous Blizzard-NetEase contract termination, which meant all Chinese server players' game data had to be saved in Blizzard's "digital urn" - players had to download and save their own game data locally... They said they'd reconnect the data after finding a new Chinese agent. For players, this is truly disgusting. After all, you can't guarantee you won't accidentally delete this "digital urn" when changing computers. And most players didn't even choose to download this "digital urn." Plus, the server shutdown was set shortly after 2023 New Year - what a New Year gift for players...

Now seeing Blizzard become a public enemy, there's a satisfying feeling. But what's sad is that I played hundreds of hours in OW1 - over 400 hours on Lucio alone, reached Legend in Hearthstone, played over 300 games as Illidan in Heroes of the Storm. All the card packs and skins I bought have vanished.

Empathizing with other players makes Blizzard's actions seem even more disgusting. Before, reheating old content and forcing out creative Jeff Kaplan seemed reasonable - after all, companies tend to stray from their original purpose over time. But the ones truly hurt are the players. I can recall summer 2017, 2018, opening Overwatch and playing with college friends. But now facing the dark computer screen, it feels like past experiences were fake. "Blizzard, did you really create such a fun game?"
